Openings, or: End game

A kyrielle

Been playing for over a year;
So, what might my best next move be?
Could writing become a career?
~ Thus far, it's been purely for me.

I've mastered some challenging forms.
So, what might my best next move be?
It's such fun to tinker with norms.
~ Tacticians, proficient, coach me.

With my queen I take Haiku's rook...
So, what might my best next move be?
I've openings 'nuf for a book
~ But lack clear winning strategy!

A Kyrielle is a French form of rhyming poetry written in quatrains (a stanza consisting of 4 lines), and each quatrain contains a repeating line or phrase as a refrain (usually appearing as the last line of each stanza). Each line within the poem consists of only eight syllables. There is no limit to the amount of stanzas a Kyrielle may have, but three is considered the accepted minimum.

Some popular rhyming schemes for a Kyrielle are: aabB, ccbB, ddbB, with B being the repeated line, or abaB, cbcB, dbdB.

Mixing up the rhyme scheme is possible for an unusual pattern of: axaZ, bxbZ, cxcZ, dxdZ, etc. with Z being the repeated line.

The rhyme pattern is completely up to the poet.

  1. The winning strategy is…be patient! That’s what I would say, be tactful and patient, something will come your way, which you can seize and end the game on a winning note.. I actually think the poetry book is a nice idea!
    Opportunities come,
    Opportunities go..
    Bide time, one’s enough
    To steal the show.

  2. Loved the poetry posed question… I have opted not to seek a career in ceramics as when doing it for profit it takes away the joy and makes it into a job. Same goes for writing poetry!

  3. Very creative, David. โœจ Makes me want to play chess again. It has been a long time. I may just stick with writing lines – that is enough challenge for me. ๐Ÿ˜† You are doing a marvelous job!

  4. All this is interesting and helpful to me since I lost my wife two years and nine months ago and wondered about writing a book but then tried to move on โ€” rather unsuccessfully. I think the poetry book is the best idea for your next move.
