My 1st Virelai Ancien
I know, I know! Rhyme is passé! A game that little children play... But I feel young! Old school, they say, but who is 'they'? Besides, I never quite could stay my playful tongue. So, I suppose you'll have your say - Read to the end, then: yay or nay - Best left unsung? Don't worry about my dismay, For I know well, far and away - I'm not top rung! Honestly, I'm not too high-strung... Should I just stuff it with a bung? Please tell me so. I'm not sure when opinion swung, But many rhymers were left stung - Among them: Poe! Their very hearts - indeed, their lungs of glorious rhymes had been wrung... Oh, such a blow! Still, some to the old ways have clung. These days, I find myself among those that rhymes sew. Still, can't say I feel too much woe, as I write for myself, and so to hell with trends. Besides which, my poetic flow tends to trickle out rather slow (rhyme suits my ends). It's true I once cared - long ago. I wrote for others - just for show, scared to offend. Thus I was willing to forgo those forms that set my thoughts aglow... No more, my friends! See, while I'd like to make amends, I'm really not the sort who tends to just... obey. And, sometimes, somebody commends me, saying that my rhyme transcends the everyday. I guess it really just depends on how well those that fads defend can truth convey. This rhyme, though clumsy, still extends to all who would cute quirks suspend or muse betray.
Let’s write poetry together!
When it comes to partnership, some humans can make their lives alone – it’s possible. But creatively, it’s more like painting: you can’t just use the same colours in every painting. It’s just not an option. You can’t take the same photograph every time and live with art forms with no differences.–Ben Harper (b. 1969)
Would you like to create poetry with me and have a completed poem of yours featured here at the Skeptic’s Kaddish? I am very excited to have launched the ‘Poetry Partners’ initiative and am looking forward to meeting and creating with you… Check it out!
