An American sentence:
Highway driving at night through Israel’s first winter rainstorm? Oy vey!
What’s an ‘American Sentence’?
Allen Ginsberg, inventor of the American Sentence, felt that the haiku didn’t work as well in English. Ginsberg decided to remove the line structure of the haiku, maintaining the requirement of 17 syllables total. He felt that removing the line count freed the American Sentence up for the idiosyncrasies of English phonemes.
The requirements:
- Composed in one line;
- Syllabic, 17 syllables;
- Condensed, written with no unnecessary words or articles;
- Complete sentence or sentences;
- Includes a turn or enlightenment.
Let’s write poetry together!

When it comes to partnership, some humans can make their lives alone – it’s possible. But creatively, it’s more like painting: you can’t just use the same colours in every painting. It’s just not an option. You can’t take the same photograph every time and live with art forms with no differences.
–Ben Harper (b. 1969)
Would you like to create poetry with me and have a completed poem of yours featured here at the Skeptic’s Kaddish? I am very excited to have launched the ‘Poetry Partners’ initiative and am looking forward to meeting and creating with you… Check it out!
I’d feel like revving up the engine, didn’t you? 😉
And btw, here’s my next etheree:
I was scared! I had my 6-year-old in the backseat….
Ahhh pity..you didn’t enjoy the best part of driving on a highway. 🙂
Drivers in CA have no idea how to drive in the rarely seen rain. I do my best to stay home and appreciate the rain because I fear the drivers.
Yeah – I would have loved to have stayed home, given the weather, but we were visiting friends up north for Shabbat. What can you do?
❤
David
Drive, or walk, as safely as possible.
well I don’t own a car – we just rented one for a Shabbat visit, and I’ve already returned it (thank goodness).
‘Oy vey” expresses it succinctly, David. LOL
💜❤️ Dolly ❤️💜
I’ll take rain over snow any day!! Still driving at night in the rain is never fun or relaxing.
yeah – snow isn’t a concern on the highways in Israel…. I’ll give you that!
oye vey is right!
No poetry and driving David! 💖🤣
no worries! I’m not interested in joining the Dead Poet’s Society!
❤
David
LOL 🤣🤣🤣 OH THANK GOODNESS.. laughing!
Oh brilliant! Lol😊
🤭
Always tense. (K)
that’s one word for it.
Your sentence makes me laugh. People don’t know how to drive in the rain where I live – a place that gets little rain.
EXACTLY. That’s Israel to a T.
👍🏻
I am a little slow. A slow driver in the rain too! 🤣
