Together, or: Moments

My first villanelle

Together we, she, holding my finger
Little, growing hand, everything to me
Moments ever, and forever linger

Abba'chka, I, to the preschool bring her
Come afternoon, she'll be returned to me
Together we, she, holding my finger

She, annoyed by childish tunes I sing her
Teasing her thus brings such delight to me
Moments ever, and forever linger

Don't joke! She, hates on my witty zinger
Of late, she's sure been talking back to me
Together we, she, holding my finger

Mamachka? She, hears my cellphone ringer
She, reciting grocery list to me
Moments ever, and forever linger

I love you! Asserts my little clinger
Her love, our love, God's precious gift to me
Together we, she, holding my finger
Moments ever, and forever linger

I’m sharing this poem from December of 2020 for today’s OLN. It was my first villanelle…

Let’s write poetry together!

When it comes to partnership, some humans can make their lives alone – it’s possible. But creatively, it’s more like painting: you can’t just use the same colours in every painting. It’s just not an option. You can’t take the same photograph every time and live with art forms with no differences.

Ben Harper (b. 1969)

Would you like to create poetry with me and have a completed poem of yours featured here at the Skeptic’s Kaddish? I am very excited to have launched the ‘Poetry Partners’ initiative and am looking forward to meeting and creating with you… Check it out!

  1. Beautiful villanelle! The repetition that you employed with the middle line of each stanza is not quite what one usually finds in a villanelle, but it reminds me of a ghazal. 🙂 It’s very aesthetically pleasing.
