The Nocturna, or: Form verses creativity

Sangeetha & David’s new poetry project

Once upon a time, two poets who’d never met in person spontaneously began writing verses back and forth to one another over the Internet. Their first poetry project took them some nine months: a 100 verse Hyakuin.

Once they’d completed their oeuvre, the two decided to continue their creative journey together; and Sangeetha came up with a fun new idea, which David loved – to explore different poetic forms together, working through the Alphabet from ‘A’ to ‘Z’.

Every week, for twenty-six weeks beginning in January of the year 2022, they would take turns selecting poetic forms beginning with the letter corresponding to that particular week (1=A, 2=B, etc., etc.) and write poems to one another using that form.

David suggested they call their new project ‘Form verses creativity’, and so it began.

N for Nocturna

David’s Nocturna

The-silence, privacy, peace of the night-
How could this poet ever-fall asleep?
Shapes glow-flowing on computer screen bright.
In thick, dark-stillness, endlessly inspired;
Essence plunges-into fantasies deep;
I compose until my eyelids droop-tired-
My worn body tells me to-get more rest-
It’s quite unhealthy, this schedule I-keep…
Still, mid-nighttide… slickest-stanzas-stream best.

Sangeetha’s Nocturna

Constellations like candlelit tables
draped in dark blue damask of delusion
waxing eloquent, fabulous fables
secretly streaming the silent dark net
to incubate in my introspection
as sleepless fat fingers tap keys to set
a rhythm to whispers sent from above
winnowing words to sing an emotion
to the whims of midnight madness... with love

  • 9 line poem based upon a nocturnal theme;
  • rhyme Scheme: abacbcdbd;
  • metered in iambic pentameter.

Let’s write poetry together!

When it comes to partnership, some humans can make their lives alone – it’s possible. But creatively, it’s more like painting: you can’t just use the same colours in every painting. It’s just not an option. You can’t take the same photograph every time and live with art forms with no differences.

  1. i hear that the computer blue light is best to stay away from if you want to fall asleep. it doesn’t impact me. i’m too damn tired from work to stay awake past midnight, writing, but even if i get the calling, i slip some whisky in my glass and force myself to conk out because i gotta wake up early and go do the damn work thing again. i often feel like a slave.

  2. Wonderful writing…love the rhyme scheme…well-conceived project overall. Ah, that schwa-R… 🙂 Interesting (telling?) how technology plays into each of your (our?) Nocturnes. Peace everywhere in our time.
