Ground control, or: Major Tom

A haibun

It was not so long ago that I aimed for the stars. Perhaps just over a decade ago… but who’s counting?

Today, I’m at a secure job that provides me & my family health and life insurance, along with other benefits. In another year’s time I’ll be eligible for dental and catastrophic health insurance. My relief at achieving this most basic of adult life goals surely transcends any exhilaration I might have experienced at soaring through the stars.

Go Dog Go Cafeโ€™s Haibun Wednesday

  • This weekโ€™s prompt is to write a haibun based upon the prompt word ‘celestial’.
  • From
    • In How to Haiku, Bruce Ross writes, “If a haiku is an insight into a moment of experience, a haibun is the story or narrative of how one came to have that experience.”

Let’s write poetry together!

When it comes to partnership, some humans can make their lives alone – it’s possible. But creatively, it’s more like painting: you can’t just use the same colours in every painting. It’s just not an option. You can’t take the same photograph every time and live with art forms with no differences.

Would you like to create poetry with me and have a completed poem of yours featured here at the Skeptic’s Kaddish? I am very excited to have launched the ‘Poetry Partners’ initiative and am looking forward to meeting and creating with you… Check it out!

  1. You achieved more staying grounded than exploring space. Providing for your family isn’t a small matter. Great poem, David.

  2. โ€œcontented spring in step
    viable earth lifeโ€

So beautifully said! Our aspirations and then our practical achievements always tugging at each other.

  3. Beautiful. I hope life blesses you in all ways. One thing I learned from riding motorcycle is to always look through the turns, or look where you want to be not where you are going, and you will always make it through the curves no matter how steep or windy. Iโ€™m glad your eyes are still on the stars. If your dreams are the motorcycle, then your trajectory is among them regardless of any given point among those getting you there! โค Thank you for sharing your gift.

  4. That is such a wonderful place to be
In this second spring of your life

    Succintly portrayed
    Through your tongue twisting haibun

  5. God, I wish I was that practical David. My wife probably does too! ๐Ÿ˜›๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ What a satisfying feeling that must be?! ๐Ÿ˜

  6. Ah the bookends of life, risk or risk, neither was guaranteed, one seems kinder, more loving though.

    1. Feet on the ground while head is still in the clouds Molly. ๐Ÿ˜› And I mean that in the nicest possible way David. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘
