Contest, or: Confusion

Poetry Partners #141

A senryu series by Veera of ‘The Forgers of Fantasy’

Pumpkins shimmering,
An array of bright orange,
Brilliant eyes glowing.

Vampires soaring high,
Razor sharp fangs glimmering,
Red capes unfurling.

Ghosts floating about,
Clocking humans to prey on,
Glowing a faint white.

Dead bodies rising,
Witches flying with broomsticks,
Skeletons dancing.

Heart gaily singing,
Amidst Halloween horrors,
I feast on candy.

A series of tanka responses by ben Alexander of ‘The Skeptic’s Kaddish’

Pumpkins shimmering,
An array of bright orange,
Brilliant eyes glowing.
A jack-o'-poem contest!
Best senryu wins tanka!

Vampires soaring high,
Razor sharp fangs glimmering,
Red capes unfurling.
Awkward enunciation
Through ill-fitting plastic teeth

Ghosts floating about,
Clocking humans to prey on,
Glowing a faint white.
Faint children's voices muffled
Under long, heavy linens

Dead bodies rising,
Witches flying with broomsticks,
Skeletons dancing.
Young poet stumbles on stage
Trips over long broom handle

Heart gaily singing,
Amidst Halloween horrors,
I feast on candy.
Oh, no! They're calling my name!
My jaws are stuck together!

Let’s write poetry together!

When it comes to partnership, some humans can make their lives alone – it’s possible. But creatively, it’s more like painting: you can’t just use the same colours in every painting. It’s just not an option. You can’t take the same photograph every time and live with art forms with no differences.

Ben Harper (b. 1969)

Would you like to create poetry with me and have a completed poem of yours featured here at the Skeptic’s Kaddish? I am very excited to have launched the ‘Poetry Partners’ initiative and am looking forward to meeting and creating with you… Check it out!
