An American sentence:
At work, I received a very positive annual review, which made me feel awkward.
What’s an ‘American Sentence’?
Allen Ginsberg, inventor of the American Sentence, felt that the haiku didnโt work as well in English. Ginsberg decided to remove the line structure of the haiku, maintaining the requirement of 17 syllables total. He felt that removing the line count freed the American Sentence up for the idiosyncrasies of English phonemes.
The requirements:
- Composed in one line;
- Syllabic, 17 syllables;
- Condensed, written with no unnecessary words or articles;
- Complete sentence or sentences;
- Includes a turn or enlightenment.
Let’s write poetry together!

When it comes to partnership, some humans can make their lives alone – it’s possible. But creatively, it’s more like painting: you can’t just use the same colours in every painting. It’s just not an option. You can’t take the same photograph every time and live with art forms with no differences.
–Ben Harper (b. 1969)
Would you like to create poetry with me and have a completed poem of yours featured here at the Skeptic’s Kaddish? I am very excited to have launched the ‘Poetry Partners’ initiative and am looking forward to meeting and creating with you… Check it out!
The awkwardness is when I get a stellar review and no raise.
๐๐ Jim ๐๐ ~ that’s annoying for sure!
They did let me know how valuable my contributions have been. I donโt work for accolades โI spend a good deal of time away from my family for money to support them, while the company has spent millions this year on the company.
What do you do?
Iโm in the lumber business. Currently the estimator for a large residential and commercial supply company. Construction is the bookends of my life. Spent the middle 20 years and a paramedic
Thanks for sharing ๐๐ป ๐
Why?
๐ค๐๐ป Dolly ๐๐ป๐ค ~ I really think that their expectations for this position are relatively low
And I really suspect that your expectations of yourself might be a tad too high.

This sounds like a text book case of imposter syndrome!
๐๐๐ป Muri ๐๐ป๐ ~ there is an element of that, but I also think their expectations are low
Congrats on the review.
๐๐๐ป Molly ๐๐ป๐ ~ thanks
Far be it from me to embarrass you with a compliment on, if anyone’s counting syllables, your Pan American sentence. ๐

Perhaps, they see your lack of self-confidence and are trying to raise you some!
๐ค๐๐ป Annette ๐๐ป๐ค
Hahahaaha. you best embrace this my friend. Deserved! ๐
๐๐๐ป Cindy ๐๐ป๐ ~ you are right
Silly mind.. we just had to reframe it! ๐
I totally get it David!! Peace.
๐๐๐ป Suzette ๐๐ป๐ ~ thanks
That’s great. Do you have difficulty receiving compliments?
๐งก๐๐ป Brandon ๐๐ป๐งก ~ yes, but I really feel that expectations are low in this case
Well then, ignore their expectations and strive to set your own bar.
But that would require self-confidence ๐
