Arts and crafts, or: Card games

An American sentence:

One of my child’s four guests did not want to draw so I played cards with her.

What’s an ‘American Sentence’?

Allen Ginsberg, inventor of the American Sentence, felt that the haiku didnโ€™t work as well in English. Ginsberg decided to remove the line structure of the haiku, maintaining the requirement of 17 syllables total. He felt that removing the line count freed the American Sentence up for the idiosyncrasies of English phonemes.

The requirements:

  1. Composed in one line;
  2. Syllabic, 17 syllables;
  3. Condensed, written with no unnecessary words or articles;
  4. Complete sentence or sentences;
  5. Includes a turn or enlightenment.

Let’s write poetry together!

When it comes to partnership, some humans can make their lives alone – it’s possible. But creatively, it’s more like painting: you can’t just use the same colours in every painting. It’s just not an option. You can’t take the same photograph every time and live with art forms with no differences.

Ben Harper (b. 1969)

Would you like to create poetry with me and have a completed poem of yours featured here at the Skeptic’s Kaddish? I am very excited to have launched the ‘Poetry Partners’ initiative and am looking forward to meeting and creating with you… Check it out!

          1. 3-5 year olds and they stay with me for two years, l love the multi-age set up and love getting to know them and their families better

          2. My daughter has the same teacher this year (second grade) as she did last year, and previous to first grade, she was at the same preschool with the same teacher for two years too… I agree – it’s a great framework.

  1. I so hope this was a slice of life and a recounting of truth! I remember playing cards with a friend’s mother at a birthday party when all the others wanted to play Monopoly but there weren’t enough tokens for everyone…. I never liked Monopoly (called it Monotony)! She taught me a game called Kings in the Corner. I haven’t played that game in years but used to play against my friends all the time!

  2. You get children like that.
    According to his Grade R art teacher, my grandson is actually good at drawing, but he just prefers the games of minecraft.

          1. Here too, it is still kindergarten but a special year, this is why it’s called GradeR since it is the year before Grade 1 or primary school.
            Yes, I know, we are very romantic ๐Ÿ˜…lol
