High ‘n light, or: Highlight

A poetic triptych

I. “High” (a triolet)

Pass it... over... take... a long puff
You'll... get high... faster if you cough
Damn, Dude... you... got the real good stuff
Pass... it over... take... a long puff
Uhm... Bro... I think you've had enough
Guys, looks like we have got liftoff!
Pass... it over... take... a long puff
You'll... get high... faster if you cough

II. “Light” (a triolet)

Time. moves. so. slow. My. head's. so. light.
I'll. just. sit. right. down. here. and. chill.
Hey. Man. this. so. fa. feels. all. right.
Time. moves. so. slow. My. head's. so. light.
Yo. what. if. lights. were. dark. not. bright?
What. was. that. noise? What. noise? Stay. still.
Time. moves. so. slow. My. head's. so. light.
I'll. just. sit. right. down. here. and. chill.

III. “Highlight” (a triolet)

Can't wait till I get to Chuck's place.
His roommate's always got strong weed.
It blows you into outer space.
Can't wait till I get to Chuck's place.
Hope he's forgotten 'bout that vase.
Or that time when his car got keyed.
Can't wait till I get to Chuck's place.
His roommate's always got strong weed.

d’Verse poetry prompt

At d’Verse, poets are encouraged to choose ONE of these threesomes:

  1. Sun; moon, earth
  2. Godhead Trinity/God/Father, Jesus/Son, Holy Spirit
  3. Yin, yang, oneness

OR Choose ONE of these compound words with the derivatives:

  1. Body, guard, bodyguard
  2. Dragon, fly, dragonfly
  3. Free, lance, freelance
  4. High, light, highlight
  5. Rain, bow, rainbow

We are writing without any set rule for rhyme or meter:

  • A poem with THREE separate and distinct stanzas
  • Each stanza numbered or subtitled with the reference word
  • Include the reference word within the stanza if not subtitled

Triolet?

A Triolet is a poetic form consisting of only 8 lines. Within a Triolet, the 1st, 4th, and 7th lines repeat, and the 2nd and 8th lines do as well. The rhyme scheme is simple: ABaAabAB, capital letters representing the repeated lines.

Let’s write poetry together!

When it comes to partnership, some humans can make their lives alone – it’s possible. But creatively, it’s more like painting: you can’t just use the same colours in every painting. It’s just not an option. You can’t take the same photograph every time and live with art forms with no differences.

Ben Harper (b. 1969)

Would you like to create poetry with me and have a completed poem of yours featured here at the Skeptic’s Kaddish? I am very excited to have launched the ‘Poetry Partners’ initiative and am looking forward to meeting and creating with you… Check it out!

  1. Yes, a good trip, David. I’ve never been high on drugs though we had plenty of chances back in the 60’s and early 70’s. You wrote the experiences well.
Oh yes, if it had been legal back in my day, I would have tried pot.
    ..

  2. Phew! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ I guess I’ll never know what my verse – form ever is. But.much.to.learn. uh.
    what. If.
darkness. were. light. what.if. we. each. knew.our.form.were. light. what.would.darkness.do๐ŸŒป

    1. BTW – why do you have to know what your “form” is?
or even – why do you have to have one?
for example I use lots of forms – few people stick to only one…

      1. Its never occurred to me. When I see verse forms here, am stoked๐Ÿค—
There’s ppl like me that stammer thru, tho’ yeah, blissful ignorance of form.

Some find it hard to understand my lines, but then am mostly mumbling in my chin. To be understood is a miracle๐Ÿ˜…
