2020, or: 20/20

Far too many did I poo-poo
In the past, for their sheer fear
Of disaster, dawning faster
When they'd been caught unawares

When they questioned fair elections
Fingers wringing, furrowed brows
I would smile ever politely--
There shall come again a now

Now I wonder, faith asunder
As every channel tells of hell
Discord 'round our world spreads further
None preserve her while death knells

She knows her leaders prey on chaos
While rehearsing empty words
No option left to us but watching
Their Theater of the Absurd

d’Verse Open Link Night

I am sharing this for today’s OLN at d’Verse. It was originally published in August 2020, in response to the devastating COVID-19 pandemic.

Let’s write poetry together!

When it comes to partnership, some humans can make their lives alone – it’s possible. But creatively, it’s more like painting: you can’t just use the same colours in every painting. It’s just not an option. You can’t take the same photograph every time and live with art forms with no differences.

Ben Harper (b. 1969)

Would you like to create poetry with me and have a completed poem of yours featured here at the Skeptic’s Kaddish? I am very excited to have launched the ‘Poetry Partners’ initiative and am looking forward to meeting and creating with you… Check it out!

  1. Well….somehow I thought I replied to this yesterday? Apologies for getting a comment in so late in the game. SO ENJOYED having you at OLN LIVE on Thursday! Hope it’s the beginning of many times ๐Ÿ™‚
Theater of the Absurd….what an excellent metaphor for what’s happeing in the US these days. Iowa, where we raised our children living in Iowa City, home of The University of Iowa, has lost its soul. They just passed a law allowing 15 year olds to work up to 6 hours a night and 16 years olds to work in bars serving alcohol….I’d put the specifics here but it is going back to the dark ages when child labor laws did not exist. So very very sad. They also have decimated their education system as has Florida. It’s so very hard to see. Don’t know if you’re familiar with the Harry Potter movies? While we’re in London (leaving Monday) we’ll take a day trip to tour the movie set where them made the movies….no rides like the Harry Potter land in Floriday….rather the actual sets, costumes, etc. Should be fascinating. In preparation, we decided to watch all the Harry Potter movies. We’ve done 1 a night and tonight we watch the final one. We’ve been struck how these films could very well be metaphorical to what’s happening in this country!
Ah…but I must try to concentrate on the positive….as in friendships with people around the globe motivated by dVerse. THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING! ๐Ÿ™‚

      Holy Shamoley! That’s CRAZY, Lillian!

*SIGH* It’s hard to think about that… it makes me think of your introduction to the poem you read on OLN, Lillian… I totally get where you’re coming from…

      Enjoy your upcoming adventure!

      Much love,
      David

P.S. I lived in Iowa City between the ages of 3-7 years-old! My dad worked at the University of Iowa for several years.

  2. Your lady has it right, “She knows her leaders prey on chaos.”
Best be watching her, she might decide to run for office, “If you can’t
beat them, join them”. Best way to go?

  3. Seems that political insanity knows no bounds – having spread to all corners of the world! It is worse than COVID! At least for COVID there is a vaccine!

Great close, David and very true! Agree wholly with your observation. That’s politics at its best! All the political leaders will be seen at their own time ,as talkers to justify their presence. We just have to tolerate them until the next election time.
