Smooth, or: Bearded

An American sentence:

I carefully trim my beard, recalling why Papa didn’t want one.

What’s an ‘American Sentence’?

Allen Ginsberg, inventor of the American Sentence, felt that the haiku didn’t work as well in English. Ginsberg decided to remove the line structure of the haiku, maintaining the requirement of 17 syllables total. He felt that removing the line count freed the American Sentence up for the idiosyncrasies of English phonemes.

The requirements:

  1. Composed in one line;
  2. Syllabic, 17 syllables;
  3. Condensed, written with no unnecessary words or articles;
  4. Complete sentence or sentences;
  5. Includes a turn or enlightenment.

Let’s write poetry together!

When it comes to partnership, some humans can make their lives alone – it’s possible. But creatively, it’s more like painting: you can’t just use the same colours in every painting. It’s just not an option. You can’t take the same photograph every time and live with art forms with no differences.

Ben Harper (b. 1969)

Would you like to create poetry with me and have a completed poem of yours featured here at the Skeptic’s Kaddish? I am very excited to have launched the ‘Poetry Partners’ initiative and am looking forward to meeting and creating with you… Check it out!

  1. The beard is not my favorite fashion. Son #2 looks really good with a beard – and he keeps it trimmed and tidy. Son #1 is not as careful and it often looks more pirate like – but he enjoys it!

      1. How about the time men spend shaving every day? Compared to 10 minutes once a month my husband spends at a Cuban barber shop, smoking his cigar and drinking a cafecito while his beard and hair are getting attended to, I don’t know what wins.

  2. This looks pretty smooth
    Have a sabbath
    Peace and Goodwill
    I’m not receiving any emails, no more
    Google is gatvol
    I must buy storage space
    The cyberspace is not altogether happy for me
    And my biggest challenge
    My phone won’t work less it remains on charge.
    But hey I won’t complain
    This too shall pass.
    Happy B-day

      1. Big problems
        The biggest right now is sending and receiving emails
        I can’t seem to solve the problem even though I’ve followed all the steps

  3. Those ZZ Top guys have a different opinion 😂I do not think they trim at all. I used to keep mine short, but in this hot weather it is so much more comfortable to just shave it all off.
